Eric Chetwood is a Partner Advisor and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional in Allworth’s Durham, North Carolina, office. He is also a graduate of the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina and author of Retire to the Fullest: Four Dimensions of Financial Peace of Mind. A passionate advocate for adoption, Eric and his wife, Allison, live in Durham, North Carolina, with their two boys.

My work is centered around helping clients flourish and retire to the fullest—so much so, I wrote a book with that very title. I view retirement not as an end, but as the beginning of a new chapter; one filled with purpose, adventure, and the freedom to be fully alive. To achieve this, my process is to:

  1. Help clients articulate what retiring to the fullest means for them.
  2. Then we quantify the cost of that dream.
  3. We take inventory of their nest egg’s ability to deliver on that dream.
  4. We stress test their nest egg through many different market environments to help ensure they can retire with confidence, regardless of future economic turbulence.
  5. We look for ways to proactively reduce vulnerabilities and potholes of risk within their nest egg.

Beyond the financial details, my clients can expect to be known and cared for. I invest time in understanding what matters most to them, what they value, how they hope their wealth can be a blessing to their family and community, and what concerns or fears they may carry when it comes to their financial future.

One of the greatest privileges of this profession is the opportunity to truly know my clients, not just by the details of their finances, but through the stories, values, and dreams they entrust me to steward.

Over the years, I’ve walked alongside clients through some of the most meaningful moments of their lives. I’ve had the honor of hearing hopes and fears that haven’t even been shared with family. I’ve been invited to second weddings, retirement parties, and birthday celebrations. I’ve seen photos from long-anticipated adventures, cheered at musical performances, and offered support through life’s transitions. I’ve sat with families as they grieve and stood with them as they navigate the uncertainty that often follows the loss of a loved one.

These moments are not side notes—they are the heart of what makes my job life-giving to me. I believe in building relationships rooted in trust, empathy, and genuine care. My role is not only to provide financial clarity and confidence, but also to walk alongside clients through every chapter of life. This work is personal, and that is what I love most about it.

The best part of my job is getting to hear people’s stories and walking with them through different chapters of life. As advisors, we get to care for people every way that money impacts them—financially, emotionally, relationally, and even spiritually.
