James Englert is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANER® professional serving Allworth’s Rochester, New York, office. Jim has built his career around comprehensive financial planning, with particular depth in retirement and retirement income strategy. His early experience as a benefits counselor at Eastman Kodak Company helped shape his approach to working with individuals preparing for and living in retirement, while his work as an Enrolled Agent brings an important tax perspective to the financial decisions clients face.
A founder of Rochester-based High Falls Advisors, which partnered with Allworth in 2026, Jim has also played an active role in advancing the financial planning profession throughout New York State. He has served as President of both the Upstate New York Chapter of the Financial Planning Association and the Western New York Chapter of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners. An experienced educator, he has taught aspiring CFP® professionals through the Medaille College CFP® certification program and served on the adjunct faculty of the College for Financial Planning. Jim also serves on the Board of Directors of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
Jim lives in Irondequoit, New York, with his wife of more than 50 years. A devoted reader and lifelong student of investing, he has been known to bring books about markets and investment strategy to the beach as “pleasure reading.” He is equally passionate about classical and jazz music, maintains an ever-growing collection that occupies its own room, and frequently attends performances at the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and GEVA Theatre. He also treasures traveling with his wife and granddaughter.
I like to begin by understanding what brought someone to financial planning in the first place. There is usually an immediate question or concern behind that decision, and learning what it is provides an important starting point. From there, I work to develop a complete picture of the client’s financial life, including investments, taxes, income, expenses, family circumstances, retirement benefits, risk considerations, and short- and long-term objectives. The more context I have, the more effectively I can tailor the plan.
That process goes well beyond gathering financial information. I want to understand a client’s interests, responsibilities, and what they hope life will look like in the years ahead. I try to put myself in their shoes and consider each decision from their perspective, then draw on my knowledge and experience to identify strategies that fit their circumstances.
My clients can expect recommendations made with their best interests at the forefront. I pay particular attention to the interplay between taxes, investment strategy, and risk, looking for opportunities to improve outcomes without losing sight of what the client is comfortable with. Just as importantly, I approach planning as a long-term relationship, remaining engaged as circumstances change and new decisions arise.
What matters most to me is knowing that I’ve treated clients with respect and served them with a sincere desire to help improve their financial lives. Over the years, many of those relationships have grown into friendships, which has been one of the unexpected and deeply rewarding aspects of my career.
I’m especially honored when a client introduces me to a family member or friend who needs advice. I view that referral as an expression of trust and a reflection of the relationship we’ve built over time. To me, there is no greater indication that I’ve done my job well.
Experience has taught me that the best solutions come from understanding the details, asking the right questions, and never losing sight of what the client is trying to accomplish.
